In order to allow the different phases (Reception, Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6) to work closely together and collaborate on projects we have introduced a two year rolling curriculum. This means that all the objectives outlined by the new curriculum for each phase will be covered within a two year cycle. In addition to enabling collaboration between phases, it also prevents the same topics being taught every year within school, helping keep our curriculum ‘fresh’. Each phase has provided an overview of the topics to be taught over the two year cycles which can also be found below.
Should you require any further information regarding the curriculum, please look out for the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evenings at the start of each year, class newsletters at the beginning of each term, follow the links to the national curriculum or speak to your child’s class teacher. There will also be various information evenings throughout the year relating to phonics, maths, reading and e-safety for parents.
RE and Collective Worship at St John’s
As we are a Church of England school, Religious Education and Collective Worship is embedded into our school curriculum. Reception to Year 6 study a range of topics throughout their time at St John’s.
Since 2016, we have followed the Stockport Agreed syllabus for Religious Education, which is a joint project of the 5 SACRE’s (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education) of Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford with RE Today. The principle aim of the RE syllabus is to engage pupils in systematic enquiry into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address, so that they can develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own.
Each unit is focused around a key question, which allows children to explore there thinking and understanding of the Christian faith, along with other faiths and non-faiths. Although we are a Church school, we promote the respect and tolerance of other people’s beliefs and the syllabus provides children with the opportunity to develop this while gaining an understanding of varying beliefs. The syllabus is reviewed and modified every 5 years which allows teaching and learning to remain current and relevant to the society in which we live.
